The attached essay was written for the M.A. I started at Macquarie University in 1997. It received an A+, but I was quite dissatisfied with it. It stops short of saying anything significant, merely summarising various viewpoints. What I had hoped to do, but was not confident enough to write, was to defend a view of Laws that allowed space for miracles.
