Rosalie and I were commissioned by the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg to produce this report in 1998. The aim was to define a process to recognise prior learning in first-year university students in order to determine whether they could be granted exemption from the Computer Literacy course.
Back then, many students were entering university without any significant experience of computers. Some came from areas where electricity to the home was rare. Others could make basic use of a computer, but had little understanding of what they were doing.
