King David, the Optimist

In Psalm 4, David writes:

There are many who say, ‘O that we might see some good!
Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!’
You have put gladness in my heart
more than when their grain and wine abound.
I will both lie down and sleep in peace;
for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety. (v. 6-8)

Imagine a challenging time when many might claim that God has deserted us. David writes about a day like that in Psalm 4, perhaps as his loyal troops end a long day’s march in retreat from his son Absalom’s rebellion.

Here’s my paraphrase of what David said to his companions:

Many of you are grumbling, wishing for a better day tomorrow, and begging God to smile on us again.
Ah! But God has actually made my heart sing today! I think I’m happier now than when I see you rejoice in the good times!
I’m going to lie down tonight and sleep deeply because I know God is keeping us safe.

Where others have seen hardship, disaster, and God’s rejection, David has experienced God’s presence, protection and blessing. Where they grumble pessimistically, David gives thanks for surviving the tough day and goes to bed satisfied.
