Exchanging Letters

Preface

Drawing on a recent experience of romance
I attempted a poem (rhyme scheme ABBCAC)
expressing the magical dance of kisser and kissee.
I know as a poet I’ve only pretended
and for your polite applause my thanks in advance.
(BTW did you notice verse 1 has now ended?)

Exchaging Letters

Drawn on computer screens and phones,
our thoughts and feelings scribbled.
Though the fruit of love we’ve barely nibbled
these symbols express what we’ve imbibed.
With emoticons in place of moans,
we exchange letters, technologically scribed.

Drawn by delightful hope ahead
(may that never be marred!)
we invite and trust, despite being scarred.
With souls and bodies naked
and by love’s pure alchemy led,
we transform scarred and scared into sacred.

Drawn towards a holy meld
in which we jointly see
the structure and the agency
that makes each one a whole.
Exchanging letters in lieu of being held,
we forge a dream, miraculous to behold.

Post Script: Dead letters

Drawn out by love’s rerun so tender,
coaxed from protective enclosure,
aware of the risks of exposure
as nascent desire is revealed:
my heart, marked “Return to Sender,”
the package now, sadly, resealed.
